Tartuffe
Author(s):
Thomas Hischak
Now one of the classic comedies of the 17th century has been shortened and simplified so that it can be produced by any group that enjoys making audiences laugh. Tartuffe, the greatest impostor of them all, pretends to be a pious and righteous fellow and has befriended the wealthy but foolish Orgon. Everyone in the Orgon household is appalled at the way Tartuffe has wormed his way into the favor of imprudent Orgon. Orgon is so taken with Tartuffe that he tries to marry his daughter to the scoundrel and even disinherits his son so that Tartuffe can get the family fortune. But Orgon's wife and a saucy servant girl have a plan that will trap the rascal and expose him for the phony that he is. The result is a series of hilarious surprises and reversals and a merry resolution that have kept audiences in hysterics for three centuries.
